In our first blog on acupuncture and fertility, we talked about some of the ways acupuncture can assist in the process of getting pregnant. But it doesn’t stop there. Acupuncture during pregnancy in Ottawa can also provide ongoing support throughout each trimester, helping manage symptoms and promote a healthy pregnancy.

If you’re looking for more information about treatment options, you can learn more about our acupuncture services and how care is tailored during pregnancy.

Obviously, when pregnancy happens you’ve achieved a major milestone, but a healthy pregnancy is the ultimate goal. At this stage, care typically shifts from more frequent treatments to a maintenance approach, often once per month. The focus becomes supporting the healthy development of the fetus while helping your body adapt to ongoing changes.

THE FIRST TRIMESTER

Acupuncture during the first trimester can help ease many of the early symptoms associated with the body’s adjustment to pregnancy. With appropriate treatment, these symptoms can often be minimized.

Alleviate symptoms such as:

  • Nausea or morning sickness
  • Constipation
  • Fatigue
  • Mood changes

Expected treatment frequency:
Doing well (monthly) | Early symptoms or a history of complications (weekly to bi-weekly until resolved or through the first trimester)

THE SECOND TRIMESTER

As the body continues to change, acupuncture can support comfort and help manage common mid-pregnancy symptoms.

Alleviate symptoms such as:

  • Heartburn
  • Back pain or sciatica
  • Insomnia
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Constipation
  • Anemia or circulation concerns
  • Headaches

Expected treatment frequency:
Doing well (monthly) | Ongoing symptoms (weekly to bi-weekly until resolved)

For those also experiencing physical discomfort, supportive care such as pregnancy massage therapy may be incorporated alongside acupuncture.

THE THIRD TRIMESTER

This is an important time for labor preparation.

Starting around week 30, treatment frequency may increase to weekly sessions to support optimal fetal positioning and prepare the body for labor. Acupuncture during the third trimester can help improve blood flow to the pelvis and support relaxation of the surrounding tissues.

In some cases, this phase of care may be complemented by approaches such as the Webster Technique to support pelvic balance and positioning.

Throughout all stages, treatment continues to focus on reducing stress, supporting sleep, and helping you feel more comfortable as your body prepares for birth.
